Pitt-Bradford to hold spring outdoors classes

BRADFORD, Pa. — The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford is holding several classes this spring to help local residents get more from the great outdoors.

Classes offered by the Division of Continuing Education and Regional Development during March and April include Simple Bicycle Repairs, Birds of Prey and Birding 101. Two of the classes are appropriate for both adults and youth.

On March 18, adults can learn Simple Bicycle Repairs from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 200 of the Seneca Building at 2 Main St. in Bradford. The cost is $20 to learn to make simple bicycle repairs, saving time and money. Learn how to change a tire, fix a flat, do minor adjustments to the derailleur and change brake pads.

A Birds of Prey class for adult and youth age 8 and older will start in the classroom from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 26 and end with a field trip from 8 to 11 a.m. March 28. The evening March 26 session will be held in Room 200 of the Seneca Building. The cost is $20 per adult and $10 per child with adult.

Participants will learn about eagles, owls, condors, vultures and falcons, then go on a follow-up field trip to a raptor rehabilitation facility, where they will have a chance to see live birds unable to be returned to the wild.

A second birding class will be held April 30 and May 2 for adults and youth age 10 and older. Birding 101 – Getting off the Ground with Your Feathered Friends will briefly outline the ways people enjoy birds from the casual observer to competitive birder. Bird-watching equipment choices, learning to make identifications, aids to improving skills, keeping lists and the topic of migration will all be covered in the classroom session from 6:30 to 9 p.m. April 30 Room 200 in the Seneca Building.

A field trip will be held rain or shine from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. May 2 at a site to be announced. Participants should wear weatherproof clothing and walking shoes. The cost is $35 for adults and $10 per child with an adult.
