Betty R. Farnsworth

Betty R. Farnsworth, 91, formerly of 106 Tionesta Avenue since 1946, died Friday evening, December 26, 2014 at the Lutheran Home at Kane, where she resided since January of 2011.

Born May 13, 1923 in Heath Township, Jefferson County, she was the daughter of Jacob and Bessie Rhodes. On August 10, 1946 in Pleasant Hill, Jefferson Co., she married Francis “Baloney” Farnsworth, who died in July of 2001.

Betty graduated from Clarion High School in 1940 as salutatorian, then attended Clarion State Teachers College, graduating in 1944 with honors. She came to Kane that year to begin her teaching career at the former West Side School, where she taught third grade for thirteen years. She remembered all of her students and always had fond memories of her tenure there.

She enjoyed her years as a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Wesley Class Treble Tones, and the First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Mary Circle and the United Methodist Women. Most of all, she enjoyed shopping and being a mother to her children who will miss her very much.

Surviving are two sons, Daniel (Becky) Farnsworth and Donald (Jane) Farnsworth, both of Kane; two daughters, Sally (Jerry) Balsom of Tacoma, Wash. and Susan (Bill Jones) Farnsworth of Lemon Grove, Calif.; six grandchildren, Deana Jean Carlson, Christina, Joshua and Joseph Balsom, Matthias and Alexandra Farnsworth; and three great grandchildren, Kaysen and Kayla Balsom and Blake Farnsworth. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and sisters-in-law also survive.

She was preceded in death, in addition to her husband and parents, by a son, Dean Farnsworth; and brothers Ralph in infancy, Robert, Dale and Richard Rhodes.

Friends may call at the Ronald McDonald II Funeral Home, Inc. in Kane on Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 and again on Saturday from 11:30 until 12:30, followed by a service at 1:00 at the First United Methodist Church with the rev. William LaVelle, pastor, and the rev. David Pflieger, chaplain of the Lutheran Home at Kane, co-officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Kane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 112 Greeves St., or to the Friends’ Memorial Public Library, 230 Chase St., both in Kane, PA 16735.
