Pitt-Bradford to hold Owl Prowl in Allegheny National Forest

WARREN, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will hold an owl watching class, or Owl Prowl, in which participants will hike through the Allegheny National Forest to try and catch a glimpse of these nocturnal birds.

The instructor, local ornithologist and nature photographer Steve Dowlan, will teach participants how to call for certain species of owls and give them a chance to see the birds, which are often heard, but rarely seen in their natural habitat.

Dowlan will hold a brief discussion of the natural history of owls before leading the class through trails commonly used for spotting owls.

The class is scheduled to begin at 7:15p.m. Oct. 9 and will cost $34 per participant person. Youths 8 and older are able to register with a parent. Participants will meet in the parking lot in front of the Allegheny National Forest supervisor’s office at 4 Farm Colony Drive, North Warren.

Participants are asked to bring binoculars, a flashlight, waterproof boots and rain gear. If the forecast calls for heavy or steady rain, the class will be rescheduled.
