BRADFORD, Pa. – The acclaimed comedy group The Improvised Shakespeare Company will perform at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Sept. 19 to kick off the university’s Spectrum Arts Series and its year-long celebration of the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth.

The troupe will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. in the Bromeley Family Theater in Blaisdell Hall. Tickets are $6 for the public and $2 for students. Due to its improvised nature, the show may contain some adult content.

Based on one audience suggestion – a title for a play that has yet to be written — the company will create a fully improvised Shakespearean masterpiece on the spot using the language and themes of the Bard. Nothing has been planned out, rehearsed or written, and dialogue is created exclusively for each individual audience.

Founded in 2005, The Improvised Shakespeare Company has been named Chicago’s best improv group by both the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Examiner. It is comprised of improv, acting and writing veterans whose credits include The Second City, iO (formerly ImprovOlympic), Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Idaho Shakespeare Company, Comedy Central and The Onion.

More fun fare will be on tap Nov. 20-22, when the Division of Communication and the Arts presents “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” In the spring, “Lear,” an adaptation of King Lear, will be presented by the division April 2-4.
