Leonard Kay Nelson, Sr., 87, of 621 Tionesta Avenue, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2013 at his home.
He was born May 20, 1926 in Kane, Pa. to Joseph and Ellen (Hanson) Nelson. Leonard grew up and attended school in DeYoung and was an avid baseball player as a young man. In 1947, in Kane, Leonard married Louise Porter. They were happily married for 64 years. She preceded him in death in 2012.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force, WW II, 1945 – 1947. Following his military service he worked in local oil fields as pumper/tool dresser for Messer Oil Co., Grosch Bros., and retired from Norcan Petroleum in 1988.
He was a member of Kane Lions Club where he served as past president and was on the board of directors. He also belonged to the Kane Senior Center where he enjoyed lunch and social time, daily
Leonard is survived by his daughters, Vickie Erickson of Pittsburgh and Nancy Petridge of Hampton, Va; sons, Leonard Jr “Otis”.(Debbra)Nelson of Kane, William (Nancy) Nelson of Meadville and Randy (Deborah) Nelson of Martinsburg, WV.;a brother, Charles Nelson of Warren and nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ellen (Hanson) Nelson; two brothers, Robert and Joseph Nelson; two children, Daniel and Barbara Nelson; grandson, Randy Nelson, Jr. and nephew, David Newpher.
A memorial service will be held at the First Church of God, 204 N Fraley St., Kane, Pa. at 9:00 am Thursday with the Rev. Chad Troup, pastor, officiating. The family will be greeting friends and relatives immediately following the service with luncheon to follow.
