Pitt-Bradford triples Internet capacity through state-wide tech consortium

BRADFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford has tripled its Internet capacity through the efforts of a technology consortium of universities called the Keystone Initiative for Network Education and Research.

The University of Pittsburgh is a member of KINBER, which built the $99.6 million Pennsylvania Research and Educational Network, known as PennREN, which connects 70 locations across the state with 1,600 miles of fiber-optic cable.

Funding for the PennREN project was provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The network is available for all Pennsylvania nonprofit agencies.
“There’s been a significant improvement for students using the Internet,” said Greg Miller, coordinator of residential network services at Pitt-Bradford.

Bill Kline, director of desktop/user services, said, “It places us in a good position for any future faculty research that professors want to conduct with faculty at other institutions on the network,” explaining that the capacity of the network would allow for the easy transmission of large amounts of data.

The improved network is also an advantage for the university’s new regional campus video learning initiative, which will transmit live feeds of unique classes between campuses.
