An engineering marvel the Kinzua Viaduct (or bridge as some
say) was built in 1882 and was the highest railroad bridge in the entire world at the
time. First built of iron and then later in 1900 it was entirely rebuilt with steel to
support heavier trains and their loads.
On Monday, July 21, 2003, at 3:15 p.m., an
F1 tornado (wind speed 73 – 112 mph) struck the side of Kinzua Viaduct. Eleven towers
from the center of the bridge were torn from their concrete bases and thrown to the valley
floor. No one was hurt in the bridge tragedy.
