Victor H. Peterson
Mt. Jewett
Victor H. Peterson, age 92, of Lantz Corners, formerly of Kushequa, passed away at home unexpectedly, Saturday, January 26, 2013. He was born May 14, 1920, in Bradford, PA. He was the son of the late Ivan and Beda Samuelson Peterson. On August 16, 1947, he married Joyce V. Martinson in the Kushequa Union Church.
Victor enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corp on June 29, 1940. He was with the 44th Pursuit Squadron at Bellows Field, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, during the attack of Pearl Harbor. He was honorably discharged in September, 1945. He was a member of the Mt. Jewett American Legion, Veterans of VFW and the PA and National Associations of Survivors of Pearl Harbor. He actively served on funeral detail.
Victor worked for South Penn Oil Company and retired from Quaker State Oil Refinery.
He was a Hamlin Township School Director on the Smethport Area School Board for 8 years and a forest fire warden for 35 years. He was active with the Mt. Jewett Boy Scout Troop 410 for over 65 years, serving as scout master for 15 years, helping put up flags on holidays for over 50 years and also serving as a committee person. He also served on the McKean County Solid Waste Authority for 13 years.
He was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Mt. Jewett, where he taught Sunday School and served on church council. He also was a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood.
Victor is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joyce, and, 3 daughters, Susan (Gary) DeVore, Savannah, IL, Sonja (Larry) Geer, Kane, PA, and Victoria (Aaron) Hill, Madison, OH. He is also survived by one brother, Allen (Diane), Aliquippa, PA, and seven grandchildren: Stephanie (Kevin) Kost; Craig (Grazyna) Geer; Ryan (Kira) Geer; David (Lisa) Geer; Erin DeVore and Shirley and Daniel Hill and also seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Craig and three brothers, Donald, Paul and Kenneth.
The family will be receiving friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home in Mt. Jewett on Tuesday, January 29, 2013. Friends may also attend a funeral service at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Mt. Jewett, Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests, if desired, memorials be made to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church or Boy Scout Troop 410.
