Harrisburg The orphans evacuated from quake-stricken Haiti this
week represent only a few of the thousands of children now awaiting adoption in
Pennsylvania, according to acting Secretary of Public Welfare Harriet Dichter.
There are approximately 3,000 children across the state still waiting to find a
permanent family to call their own, said Dichter. While the plight of the
Haitian orphans has attracted much attention, it is important to recognize the many other
children for whom we are always working to find a supportive family and safe home
environment. Every child needs to have a permanent home and a loving family
While some of the evacuated Haitian orphans are in the process of being adopted,
Pennsylvanians interested in learning how they can help the affected children should visit
the Allegheny County Web site at: www.alleghenycounty.us/dhs/haiti.aspx.
In addition to the 3,000 Pennsylvania children are waiting to find a permanent family,
more than 20,000 Pennsylvania children live in foster, or out-of home, care.
Organizations like the Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network, county children and
youth agencies, and private adoption agencies help special needs foster children find
permanent homes. These agencies also work with potential resource parents to obtain the
necessary background reviews, provide extensive training, and certify the parents and the
homes.
Efforts to reach prospective adoptive and foster parents include the Heart Gallery, a
traveling photo exhibit featuring more than 50 Pennsylvania children waiting to be
adopted. Portraits in the gallery aim to capture the unique personality and spirit of
children who are seeking a permanent, loving home.
