Nursing Agencies - A New Era of Roles and Challenges PDF Print E-mail
Posted by Robert SPAR

It is clear to most observers that healthcare facilities are threatened by the mass shortage of nursing staff all over America. The reasons for this are unclear, but are continuously pressuring healthcare providers to search for solutions to overcome this obstacle. Nursing agencies lately have been working ahead of the current situation in an attempt to provide nursing staff to cover the needs of healthcare facilities all over America.

Nursing in America is known to be a seasonal profession. Almost every hospital and healthcare facility experiences a period, every now and then, when there is a considerable shortage of nursing staff. Filling vacant nursing positions on short notice is a real dilemma to healthcare professionals. Nursing agencies have evolved rather dramatically lately and are providing means of connection between registered nurses and different medical establishments.

A nursing agency is a recruiting agency that market the services of nurses to facilities and healthcare professionals who are seeking to hire nurses on temporary or permanent basis. These agencies are usually in the form of small private businesses that match registered nursing personnel with the demands of the healthcare market. In the USA, sometimes nursing agencies are named nurse registries and are the main outlets for providing locum tenens nursing staff and travel nurses for medical facilities all over the country.

Administrators of a nursing agency are responsible for providing highly efficient nurses to their clients. Malpractice and other legal issues are challenging nursing agencies in the market nowadays. Hence, nursing registries are always very meticulous when choosing nursing personnel to recommend for the needs of healthcare facilities. Most nursing agencies require a rather detailed documentation of the qualifications of nursing personnel before they are enrolled in their programs, these include:

- Two Identification forms including a passport for overseas nurses

- A nurse board registration certificate

- A minimum of 2 reference letters

- A detailed curriculum vitae including degrees and areas of expertise

- Details of CPR and manual handling training

- Some personal financial details, such as present bank account details, superannuation fund details, and the candidate's tax file number.

Nursing agencies are increasingly filling vacant nursing positions in government and federal hospitals and other healthcare establishments. Moreover, those agencies are providing nurses in demand for home care settings including physical therapy, intravenous therapy, pediatric care, occupational and speech therapy. Hiring a domestic nursing professional is not an easy task, but can easily be achieved with the aid of experienced nursing agencies. On the other hand, the enormous role played by some reputable nursing agencies is wrestled by the legal burden that usually accompanies great responsibilities. Lawsuits against inefficiency and malpractice of some nursing staff are hindering the progress of some of these recruiting agencies.

Nursing agencies are now playing critical roles in filling nursing position vacancies all over America. However, those agencies are challenged by the legal burden of malpractice and inefficiencies of a percentage of nurses which might shrink their overall role in rescuing the healthcare industry. Legislation of laws that accurately outline the roles and duties of agencies, candidates and clients will sure help in solving the problem.
