Group Looking To Save Rim Rock Scenic Overlook PDF Print E-mail

By Stony, on Wednesday, 18 June 2008

A new group, named "The Friends of Rim Rock" has formed to try to protect the Rim Rock scenic overlook in the Allegheny National Forest.  The mineral rights under Rim Rock are owned by Papco, an oil producer who has plans to drill oil and gas wells around, and  in the scenic overlook area.

This is from their "unofficial website" at http://tinyurl.com/66bsqv

We are a coalition of groups who calls ourselves "Friends of Rim Rock". Some of our members are from the groups: the Allegheny Defense Project, Allegheny Outdoor Adventure Group, and the Tionesta Snowmobile Group. And "regular people" who want to help save Rim Rock from the proposed oil and gas drilling, so future generations can enjoy it, as many in the past have.

Rim Rock is undoubtedly the "Crown Jewel" of the Allegheny National Forest. It is the most advertised and most visited attraction our area has to offer tourists.

On any give day, hundreds of visitors may come to this scenic overlook/picnic area, just to enjoy it's breathtaking beauty.

The Friends of Rim Rock wish to save this gem from the total destruction that drilling oil and gas wells will bring to this area.

Please sign our petitions or our on-line petition that will tell those in charge that we want this area saved from the destruction drilling will do.

Please help us and you too can be a "Friend of Rim Rock".

And here is information for the "Friends of Rim Rock Summer Picnic":

Summer Rim Rock Picnic/hike

On Sunday June 22nd, we will be doing a Rim Rock Picnic, and Hike on this, the second day of summer.

We hope this one will be bigger than our regular Sunday meet-ups. Some of us will camp out Saturday night nearby, and perhaps even Sunday night.

One of our goals of this picnic/meetup, will be to circulate  information about the impending oil well drilling at Rim Rock, and we will have petitions to sign if you are opposed to ruining this Crown Jewel of the ANF (as well as the nearby Morrison Run area).

The petitions will be sent to our elected officials and the personnel at the ANF who we hope will understand the public does not want Rim Rock drilled for oil and gas.

This will be an informal picnic, for like minded individuals.

Friends of Rim Rock will be joined by the Allegheny Outdoor Adventure Group, the Alleghey Defense Project, the Tionesta Snowmobile Club and others, to discuss plans to stop the drilling at Rim Rock.

Besides an all day, fun picnic, we will also hand out fliers to visitors, provide petitions to be signed, do a hike through the rock area seeing all the main attractions, visit a geocache and perhaps place one or two new ones, and maybe we will have the rappelling line set up for those interested.

And if you play a musical instrument, bring it! We may have some music provided.

If you have been to any of our past picnics, you know they are fun, and informative! It's a great group of friendly people, often sharing valuable information, exciting or funny stories and sometimes great home-made food.

You will need to bring your own food and drinks and perhaps a dish to pass if you wish, your own folding chairs, and maybe a folding table if you have one.

We will meet in the second parking lot at Rim Rock (where we normally meet) at 11AM Sunday June 22nd. We will likely stay most of the day until about 4PM or so.

Some of us may meet up and camp out Saturday night (nearby) and Sunday night. If you are interested e-mail me for more information Join us one or two nights for a real fun time, or just come out Sunday for our "Big Summer Rim Rock Picnic".

Please join us on Sunday for this very important Picnic. We need to
get as many people informed about the plans to drill this Crown Jewel of the ANF, and let the forestry know the public wants them to do their job and protect this for future generations to enjoy.

Mark this on your calendar and bring as many friends as you can!

Sunday June 22nd- Rim Rock Scenic Overlook rt 59 between Warren and Bradford PA 11AM-4PM?

Or plan to camp out Saturday or Sunday nights or come out for both nights and the Sunday picnic!

You are welcome to spend the whole weekend with us!

Here is an online petition you can sign if you support the efforts of the Friends of Rim Rock:

http://www.petitiononline.com/rimrock/petition.html

Unfortunately, this seems to be the sign of the times:

Sign of the times

Please come and and support the efforts if you can!  Hope to see you there!

Stony!
