I hear you about HP being American-made, but that's the one I had that died after only 2-1/2 years! My emachine lasted more than twice that, abeit being much slower, and I'm on that now as an emergency backup.
Here are links to the stats I was offered. My SIL says Intel is the best processor. Any ideas on that?
Also, company is will to provide me with a web cam for skype in lieu of a monitor, so how much are they worth? I paid $800 for the HP in 2010 and don't want to get a machine that is worth less, unless the webcam makes it worth it.
Here are links to the other machines they're offering:

With any product there is going to be ones that are lemons. I have 4 HP computers and one is a desktop that is 12 years old and it still works like a champ, running windows XP. With any product there is going to be a certain percentage that end up with bad components.
That said, I've narrowed it down to the two of your options that I would consider for myself. These two:
Ok, the processors and memory are basically the same. Graphics look similar with 1GB and they both have DVDrw however the hard drives are different. HP has 1TB hard drive while the Lenovo has 2.
Another point with the Lenovo is it has built in Wi-Fi if that is something you might need or use so you can put your computer in places where there are no wires.
If it where me, I would go with the Lenovo IdeaCentre K430 3109-1NU.
Now, about the webcam in place a monitor. Don't fall for it, they'll give you a cheap $20-$30 webcam when you can get a good brand new monitor that cost a lot more. Even if you just keep it as a backup, you'll be glad you did if your current one goes and you have to drop $100+ for a new one.
Ohh, by the way, HP is an American company, not necessarily American made.

Just want to let you know, my soninlaw and a friend's husband, both who work designing computer systems, also recommended the HP computer you recommended. Good call.

Yes, I would also vote for the HP. They seem to stand behind their line better than others also.
For the most part, most of the brands use the same manufacturer for a lot of their components. Sometimes a lot of the cheaper brands are very similar.
Even if HP is made elsewhere, the company is American and at least SOME of the money is kept here.
But if you want to make your decision on "helping America", maybe the best thing to do would be to find out which one employs the most workers in the US.
