The staff at the Mckean County SPCA are working very hard to make sure all the animals at the shelter and elsewhere are cared for. I walk dogs on my way home from work almost daily, and I can tell you first hand how dedicated the staff is. There is always excitement thoughout when an animal gets adopted. They are also going on many calls. People come and go, but the main focus is on the animals. Whether you are friends with a past or current employee of the staff or board, the welfare of the animals is the number #1 priority. On another note......dogs in parked cars in this heat is going to get people a citation. The SPCA has just purchased an infra-red temp gun that can read the temperature in a parked car. Last night a woman was cited b/c her dog was left in a car, that had an interior temp of 105 degrees. If you see a dog in a hot parked car, call 911 and report it.
Sorry for being cryptic, but I don't feel that's it's my place to defend or support the decision made by the SPCA. What I do know is that there are TWO sides to this story. NO! Make that THREE sides! The third being the side of the animals. I'm on THEIR side, and don't care for the politics, popularity, and bashing that's going on. It is having a negative effect and it is not in the best interest of my furry friends at the shelter.
If anyone is interested in the workings of our local SPCA, please stop down for a visit! You will see for yourself how much work goes in, to insure that the animals are kept clean, fed, and safe. You will see how dedicated the manager is to making it happen. You may even end up walking a deserving dog!
I don't work there, but I do go there almost daily. I have an SPCA cat at my house right now, on a 10 day medical foster. She was spayed by a special fund so she may find a forever home. In fact, several other animals that have been there for too long have been neutered in the hopes that they will now find homes.
So don't let the recent event sour any of you on the SPCA. It needs our support!
I saw the budget for the SPCA in the ERA and can not imagine how it would cost that much. I went there to adopt a dog in 2004 on a tuesday and wanted him then because he was shivering and standing in poop, they told me to come back on saturday morning when they opened, first come first gets the dog.

That was 8 years ago. An unfortunate situation. Different management now. Back then, almost every dog I walked had diarrhia(SP?). Now they are given treatments for that, fleas, ear mites, etc. I know how much it costs me for ONE dog per year. (We now have 4) I can't imagine the cost of hundreds of dogs, cats, some rabbits, etc coming in yearly- some of them injured, sick, infected. Some requiring surgery. (Surgery for animals is not cheap. Just payed a $364 vet bill myself.) Plus the payroll, but it's not going to make them rich. I adopted a cat 16 years ago, and another one 10 years ago. Both were sickly. Both are still with me, going strong. The cat i have in my home right now on a foster visit, recovering from her spaying, is very healthy. Like I said before, stop down and see for yourself. If you still have concerns about the way things are done, volunteer! Get involved. So many unwanted animals. So few hours of your time.
I will stand with you Shadow on this one. Our SPCA in Bradford has a staff that perform some tasks not many of us would care to devote time on or have the stomach for. Their work goes on unnoticed by the rest of us. Most would not know how hard it is for them to choose what animals to keep and which ones they MUST not. That decision is not taken lightly by the staff there, and I'm relieved it is not mine to choose. I really hate to hear anyone gripe about the job that they do. I suggest anyone that finds the need to criticize should volunteer their time for a while. I think they would come back with a different attitude. They might have criticisms but I think they would be the constructive kind the whole community might use to help a very valued asset.
Longtime animal cruelty officer Tony Danias "has been relieved of his duties" with the McKean County SPCA, according to board president Dick Gorton.
Tony was absolutely worthless when I had a problem with a neighbors dog who was never put on a leash, peeing and pooping on my front porch. I called Tony way too many times and he never did a thing to the people. He was worthless! Glad the SOB is gone!
