That was the big fear of the last Mayoral administration.
The fear was "if Tom Riel is elected, we will have nudie bars on every corner on Main Street".
But as we all know Tom became mayor and we don't have a nudie bar on every corner. We don't even have ONE single nudie bar anywhere in the city of Bradford.
So remind me .... WHAT was the big objection to a nudie bar on Main Street?
Oh yea, the "clientèle' " a nudie bar might attract.
The closest one we can look to for reference is the "gentleman's club" in Salamanca. *I'm told* it attracts about the same clientèle' as most similar clubs anywhere do .... Lots of doctors, lawyers, business professionals, company owners and guys who have extra $20 dollar bills to slip into a dancers G string! And yes, I do believe that even a few married guys slip in from time to time! Maybe even some fathers, uncles, and even grandfathers!
So here is my question ...... How is the clientèle' of a gentleman's club any different from the clientèle' of a TATTOO parlor? Or perhaps even a sleaze-bag tattoo operation? Have you seen THEIR clientèle lately?
How is it Bradford was literally TERRORIZED at the thoughts of having just one nudie bar on Main Street, because of the "sleaze factor" .... AND YET we DO have some four Tattoo Parlors in close proximity to Main Street, and nobody is worried about their "customer base" or what kind of individuals they might attract?
Is this a double standard or what? We worry about a nudie bar and guys seeing boobies but not an overabundance of tattoo artists soaking up the welfare checks of the city? OUR tax money? Somebody explain this to me?
We worry about a nudie bar that might attract horny mid-aged "regular guys" but not a shady tattoo place that might attract crack-whores, and meth-heads covering their bodies with welfare funded tattoos?
Nice RANT Stony! But WOW; Since I’m clueless about your context, you have piqued my interest. Care to share?
As far as I know, we have ONE (BUSTY’s) in the whole county (Turtle Point). I’ve never been there, but had once been solicited to join in the festivities by a gaggle of toothless girls in a Suburban—or was it a Jimmy, while I was taking pictures of geese on the ice-covered haymaker flats (Barnum Road). Needless to say I declined.
My first questions would be, what brought this rant on”? Who is trying to open the Titty bars on Main Street (and why)? And why connect them with the Mayor? Would you care to shed just a bit more light?
This is not about the imagined threat of the mayor opening a nudie club on Main Street.
My intended point is, that I, and others may feel that we have a lot more to fear from the customers of a shady tattoo parlor than the customers of a nudie club.
And yet the people of Bradford were horrified at the thoughts of a nudie bar on Main Street, yet there are several tattoo parlors that don't raise an eyebrow.
And, I would go further and guess that the nudie bar would be taking money from mostly guys who can better afford it, while the tattoo parlors are taking welfare money from scummers who can ill afford it! Look at how many "families" and I use that term lightly, you see parading their kids and tattoos up and down Main Street all day long! I think it safe to say, that the majority of tattoos you see in Bradford are/were funded by the welfare department. Money that *should have went* to baby clothes, diapers and other children's needs. Every one in town (except musicman) can see what is going on!
I see where you are coming from…and for the most part I agree! Didn’t miss your point, you simply didn’t make one earlier. Now that you have made one (a point that is), how might you propose the Mayor handle your grievance, within the law or according to your will?
Glad I'm not the only one who remembers the public outcry when Tom Riel wanted to open a "gentlemen's club" on Main Street. (I for one felt it was a legitimate business and should have been permitted. As it is, I believe that the building where he wanted to establish it is still vacant...)
Jon Yale, the Main Street Manager, being quoted in The Era as saying: "We've pretty much proven family-oriented events downtown are successful," he said, adding that by promoting family actives downtown merchants had "one of the best Christmas shopping seasons in years."
We have "family tattoo parlors" that don't mind taking welfare money from everybody in the family! LOL!
"Running down on the first of the month to get new tattoos- a family-oriented event"! LOL! .............. Bradford style!
Wow, talk about a ghost from the past! I think one of our more frequent posters on here used to ghost write for this magazine, and correct me if im wrong, but didnt some guy named Tom Reel, Tom Reed, Tom something, also write for the MLR..? Too bad we couldnt locate some of those stories, now that would make for some good reading!
