In looking through the headlines this morning I came across this:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110521/ap_on_re_us/us_moon_rock_sting

I DO NOT want to flog a dad horse here, but no matter what the circumstances this woman is guilty. It's illegal to sell moon rocks if it is real. And it's fraud if it isn't. So, if due legal process is followed, and she can be convicted of either fraud or theft.

I suppose it could be just some more of the government's cover up of a moon landing that "didn't occur." I would like to know how many people participated in that cover up. Must be hundreds of thousands by now. And i wonder how long they will be able to keep Bush/Cheney's ordering of 9/11 silent.
I thought that maybe with the world ending yesterday I wouldn't have to worry about that any more. Now I have to fret some more. Pun intended.
(I'll bet the atheists in Iceland were nervous for a little while!)

It's not illegal to sell or purchase a moon rock that came to earth in a meteorite.

All she has to do is say that is what it is or what SHE thought it was.

If it turns out to be a fake, she can claim SHE was the victim of fraud and thought it was real.

The article says that most moon rocks for sale on the Internet are fake, what happens if someone buys one someplace and thinks they have the real deal?

What if my neighbor sells me a genuine zippo lighter, or what I took to be one because I don't know any different and I later try to sell it to a collector who then says I tried to fraud THEM with a counterfeit? Am I really trying to fraud them if I believe the lighter to be real?

Might be the woman is just guilty of being stupid.

Just pointing out some possibilities. Not knowing all the facts and all about the case, I can't judge someone to be guilty "no matter what".

And what if she did BUY it from someone not knowing it was stolen? is that theft?

I can find NO information on meteorites that originate from the moon. Even meteors that have been observed hitting the moon have only dug small craters maybe 3 meters across and with little debris. The moon DOES have it's own gravity, 1/6th of the earth's to keep debris on it's surface.

It is illegal sell moon rocks. Participating in the transaction is illegal.

I understand your "innocent until proven guilty" concerns. Possibly I jumped to conclusions just like those who were affected by the Arizona shootings. He's not guilty yet. Even though all those people who saw the shooting must not think hum guilty until a trial results. It's just "alleged."

In the very same article you posted, Joseph Gutheinz, a University of Arizona instructor and former NASA investigator said this:

Quote:
Gutheinz said most purported moon rocks offered for sale on the Internet are bogus, though authentic moon rocks can be purchased if they came to Earth in a meteorite.

So it is NOT illegal to sell or buy ALL moon rocks according to the former NASA investigator. That means that it is possible for someone to legitimately sell or buy moon rock OR rock they THOUGHT was a moon rock.

We still don't know if she just bought it at a garage sale and thought it was worth much more or if she used to work at a museum and stole it.

Comparing the evidence of what we know in this case to the evidence and what we know in the Arizona shootings is crazy.
