Aaron Kagan Putt brings anthropologist’s view to painting

"Lo Mejor Del Mundo" from Aaron Kagan Putt's Identidad/Publicidad series of paintings exploring the impact of globalized advertising on cultural perception. Putt will have an exhibition of his paintings beginning Feb. 4 at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.BRADFORD, Pa. – Artist Aaron Kagan Putt will bring his works based on traveling to and living with other cultures to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford next week.

The exhibition of his work will open at noon Feb. 4 in the KOA Speer Electronics Lobby of Blaisdell Hall with an artist’s talk and reception. The exhibition will be on display in the KOA Art Gallery through March 4. Hours in the gallery are 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and when the theater is open for evening performances.

“I immerse myself within communities and environments that are distinct from my own,” he says of his travels through West Africa, South America, Central America, the Middle East, North Africa, the Caribbean, and Western and Eastern Europe.

Putt makes sketches, photographs, interviews and video and sound recordings while traveling, then returns to the studio to paint individuals and scenes using elements of surrealism, collage, cut-outs, traditional portraiture and the seductive aesthetics of advertising.

In 2015, Putt was a recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, which is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
