Drive Sober This Thanksgiving Season and Weekend

Oil City, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania DUI Association are urging motorists not to drive impaired this Thanksgiving season.

Approximately 46.9 million Americans are expected to travel for Thanksgiving, including nearly 42 million who will take a road trip at least 50 miles away from home, according to American Automobile Association.
With so many people on the nation’s highways, it is important for drivers to follow traffic laws, including not driving impaired by drugs or alcohol.
Last year, there were 4,311 crashes and 39 fatalities in Pennsylvania during the Thanksgiving season. Of those, 421 involved an impaired driver and resulted in 10 fatalities.
In the six counties included in PennDOT District 1, there were 214 crashes, resulting in one fatality during the 2014 Thanksgiving season. Of those, 17 crashes involved impaired drivers, none of which resulted in a fatality.
Law enforcement agencies statewide will conduct sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols starting Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve, as part of the Operation Safe Holiday campaign. Special focus will be placed on nighttime seat-belt use and impaired driving.
PennDOT encourages residents and visitors to keep their holiday celebrations safe for themselves and others by planning ahead for a designated driver or alternate transportation.
