Mental health activist to speak at Pitt-Bradford

1pitt-danee-sergeant-hs_optBRADFORD, Pa. – J. DanĂ©e Sergeant of Active Minds will speak at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford as part of Disabilities Awareness Month.
Sergeant’s talk, “The Hand That I Was Dealt,” will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Harriett B. Wick Chapel on campus with a reception to follow. The talk is free and open to the public.

Sergeant will speak candidly about her mental health journey, beginning in fourth grade, when she realized that she wasn’t like most other children. She will address mental health issues as they relate to college students, members of the LGBTS community and substance abuse. She will also talk about the role of peer support and the reduction of stigma in awareness and recovery.

Sergeant is a survivor of trauma, homelessness and substance abuse living with bipolar disorder. Since seeking and receiving the help she needed to manage her mental health issues, Sergeant has been empowering others to speak up, embrace who they are and seek the help they need so that they can survive and thrive in college and beyond.

Sergeant is a graduate of Southern University at New Orleans and currently a graduate student at Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service. She serves as a peer specialist at Rainbow Heights Club, an organization that provides advocacy and support to LGBT-identified mental health consumers, and she volunteers at a women’s shelter.

Active Minds is the leading nonprofit organization that empowers college students to speak openly about mental health in order to educate others and encourage them to seek help.
