George M. “Bud” Swanson, 82, of 5 Oberg Avenue, Mt. Jewett, passed away Sunday (September 28, 2014) at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born May 25, 1932, in Mt. Jewett, he was a son of George and Iona Murray Swanson. On April 2, 1966, in Mt. Jewett, he married Bernadine Lantz who survives.
Bud , a graduate of Hazel Hurst High School class of 1951, worked at Kaul Clay in Clermont before entering the U.S. Air Force where he served for eight years during the Korean War. He later was employed by the PA Railroad for fourteen years and Pennzoil for twenty-five years where he retired as a superintendent. After retirement he continued working part time at Borden Chemical and Kane Lawn and Garden.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #574 and the VFW Post#6347 where he had served as commander of both. He also served as the Quartermaster for the VFW for thirty-five years. He was a former Mason and had previously belonged to the Mt. Jewett Sportsman’s Club. As a member of the ambulance board , he also was a driver for over thirty-five years.
For thirty years, he coordinated and lined up the Swedish Festival parade. He belonged to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church and served on the cemetery board for many years.
Bud was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Paul (Deb) Swanson of Mt. Jewett; two daughters, Dina (Lanny) Davis of Crosby and Lynette (Jason) Campogiani of Lewis Run; six grandchildren, Amanda Swanson, Sierra Swanson, Baylee Swanson, Alexandra Davis,
Lance Davis and Nick Campogiani; a great-grandson, Charlie Swanson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mona (Bill) Smith and Dorothy(Frank) Howard.
Friends and family may attend a memorial service on October 11 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church on Main Street in Mt. Jewett. Military services will be held at the church. Burial will follow at Nebo Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Mt. Jewett Ambulance Association or the VFW Post # 6347 and American Legion Post #574 or to a charity of choice.
The Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. in Mt. Jewett is in charge of arrangements.
