Donald C. McClelland
Donald Chester McClelland, 78, of 130 Greeves Street, passed away Tuesday (August 5, 2014) at UPMC Hamot.
Born January 22, 1936, in Dayton, PA, he was a son of the late William “Chet” and Doris Frances Wilson McClelland.
Before his retirement, Mr. McClelland was employed as a head sawyer at Maljovec Lumber in Kane.
He was a member of both the Kane VFW Lodge #1132 and the Kane Eagles Club Aerie # 307. He also was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Don loved music, specifically playing his guitar. He once played with Chet Atkins in Chet’s band at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. He also performed at the New York State World’s Fair with country music legend Bill Anderson. Don wrote and recorded a song titled “Christmas Teddy Bear”. He was a former member of the Johnsonburg Drum and Bugle Corps.
Surviving are his long-time companion, Ruth Holmes of Kane; five sons, Donald (Joyce) McClelland of Bradford, James (Ruth) McClelland of Mt. Jewett, Tim (Sue) McClelland of Smethport, Gerry (Wanda) McClelland of California and Lawrence “Franny” (Dawn) McClelland of California; two daughters, Terri (Frank) VanTassel Vorse of Seneca and Jennifer (Kenn) Heard of Nevada; three sisters, Jean VanGiesen of Waterford, Carolyn (Ward) Fitzsimmons of Smethport and Nelda Haas of Albermarle, NC; dear friend, Darrell Goodman of Kane; sixteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Edward McClelland; a sister, Janet Bosh; and a son, Mark “Lefty” McClelland.
Friends will be received Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. where a funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. W. Craig Smith, pastor of the Mt. Jewett/ Hazel Hurst United Methodist Churches, officiating.
