Josephine Brothers, 81, of 125 Yarnell Street, Kane, and Sarasota, FL, passed away Wednesday (July 30, 2014) at UPMC Hamot.
Born September 10, 1932, in Kane, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Rose Bifano Nicolazzo. On April 25, 1952, in Kane, she married James Brothers who preceded her in death.
Before retirement, Josephine had worked for Syroco Industries of Syracuse, NY and had also been a bus driver for the school district of Baldwinsville, NY.
She was a member of St. Callistus Catholic Church, Kane, and St. Martha Catholic Church in Sarasota FL. She belonged to the Democratic party and was an advocate and philanthropist to many and varied children’s groups and organizations. She also belonged to the Domino Club of Rolling Green in Sarasota and the Friendship Center, also in Sarasota, where she was a formidable poker and dominos player.
Her favorite activities were camping and exploring the United States. She and her husband of 49 years, Jim, liked to go to their camp in the Adirondacks to snowmobile.
Surviving is her son, James (Cathy LaRusso) Brothers of Milwaukee, WI; a granddaughter, Samantha Blu; one sister, Anne Jerman of Sarasota; many nieces and nephews; seven great-nieces and great-nephews; three great-great- nephews.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband and parents, are five siblings, Francis “Sonny” Nicolazzo, Katherine “Kate” Chiono, Julia Bridges, Robert “Tuna” Nicolazzo, and William “Muff” Nicolazzo.
Friends will be received at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at which time funeral services will be held with the Rev. Philip Pinczewski, pastor of St. Callistus, officiating. Burial will be at St. Callistus Cemetery.
