Betty Mae Johnson
Betty Mae Johnson, 91, passed away Tuesday (April 29, 2014) at the Lutheran Home at Kane after a short illness.
Born September 12, 1922, in Kane, she was a daughter of the late Charles Monroe and Mabel Elizabeth Peterson Eliason. On December 20, 1940, she married Daniel Lehman who died February 5, 1942. She was widowed at nineteen with a one-week old infant daughter. On April 6, 1945, she married Gunnar Arne Johnson who preceded her in death on May 4, 1987.
A graduate of Kane High School class of 1940, she began working at the former Kane Bank while still in school. She quit when she married the first time but returned to work when she was widowed in 1942. After her second marriage, she quit working to raise her family.
Mrs Johnson was one of the managers of the former Red and White Super Market. She eventually returned to work at the Hamlin Bank, retiring in the 80’s. For twelve years, she ran her own business, The Fabric and Yarn Shop in Kane.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Martha Circle and also served on various church councils and committees. She served on the board of the Kane Community Hospital and was a member of the KCH Auxiliary where she volunteered for many years. She also belonged to the former Business and Professional Women where she served as secretary.
When her children were younger, she served as a Girl Scout leader, a PTA member and officer and also enjoyed bowling. As an avid knitter, she donated well over 300 baby afghans to the Linus Project in both Pittsburgh and Erie.
Surviving are two daughters, Danette Sarvey and Susan Beatty, both of Kane; a son Thomas (Dawn) Johnson of Kane; three grandchildren, Christopher Sarvey, the Rev. William (Lori) Beatty and Dawn (Alan) Stefani; six great grandchildren, AJ Stefani, Ryan Stefani, Caroline Sarvey, Hannah Sarvey, Rachel Beatty and Eliana Beatty; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles “Chuck” Eliason and an infant brother; three sisters, Dorothy Jean Jolly, Carol Ann Zook and Janet Eliason; and a son-in-law, Roger Beatty.
Friends will be received at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and again on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a. m. at which time the funeral will be held at the funeral home with the Rev. William R. LaVelle, Jr. , pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Tabor Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 112 Greeves St., Kane, PA 16735, the Lutheran Home at Kane, 100 High Point Drive, Kane or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
